Trip Overview

Ultralight or microlight aviation involves the use of a lightweight, 1 or a 2-seater fixed-wing aircraft used for flying over short range distances.  This sort of aircraft is considered to be very ideal for short arial and sight-seeing tours.  The first professional ultralight aircraft service was introduced in Nepal in 1997, which is also claimed to be the first ever in South Asia. Since then, the popularity of the service among visitors has grown leaps and bounds, and it currently serves as one of the major tourist attractions in the country.

The most popular hub for ultralight aviation in Nepal is the scenic city of Pokhara, where commercial operators offer ultralight tours around the city. The ultralight flight in Pokhara offer a unique perspective to visitors who wish to experience the full spectrum of the magnificent Pokhara Valley along with the peaks, rivers, and lakes surrounding it.  These two-seaters are powered by engines that are powerful enough to take you close to the mountains. While visitors have the option to choose either windowless or enclosed ultralights during flights, but windowless crafts are usually preferred by more passengers. Yet, for safety reasons, the longer duration flights near the Himalayas can only be operated in enclosed aircrafts.

These ultralight flights from Pokhara operates in two shifts, where the first shift starts from sunrise to 11 am and the second between 3 pm till sunset. It is a short flight over the city taking you above the Phewa Lake, near the Sarankot hill, over to the Buddha monastery and the south side of the city.   The speed range of the ultralights can reach anywhere between 50km/hr to 90km/hr reaching a maximum altitude of 5,000 feet, which is sufficient to give you a panoramic view of the entire Annapurna range with a view of Dhaulagiri, in the distance. Each flight operates for around an hour, where visitors get the opportunity to feel the cool winds of the Himalayas and an amazing ‘bird-eye view’ of Pokhara.
