Lower Dolpo Trek: Overview

Lower Dolpo trek is a newly altered teahouse trek in the remote western part of Nepal. Considered to be one of the most challenging adventure trips in the Himalayas of Nepal, the Lower Dolpo trek has recently been luring plenty of people from across the globe.

The trek to Dolpo begins with a scenic flight to Jhupal via Nepalgunj. Travelling in the remote villages with the sight of rain shadow landscapes and colourful barren slopes can certainly be an experience of a lifetime. The highest elevation point in Lower Dolpo trek is Numa La Pass at 5,360m. Dolpo is also one of the few places in Nepal, where the locals still practice pre-Buddhist, Bon Po religion. Open to the public in 1998, unlike most of the trekking destinations in Nepal, Dolpo offers remoteness and solitude. Due to the remoteness of the region, the culture, tradition, and nature of Dolpo region are isolated and unspoilt.

Fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj

We start our Lower Dolpo trek with an hour-long flight to Nepalgunj, a small town located in western part of Nepal. Nepalgunj, a town near the Nepal-India border, is a typical Terai town that reflects the diverse culture of Nepal. In this small town, we visit the nearby villages and the old local markets. Overnight at Nepalgunj.

Day 02
Fly from Nepalgunj to Jhupal (2,320m) and trek to Dunai

After the early morning breakfast, we take another flight to the beautiful town of Jhupal. The town located at the foothills of the Himalayas offers a stunning view of peaks like Dhaulagiri and Annapurna. From Jhupal, we being our trek through terraced fields to the gorge of the Bheri river. We then continue our walk towards the administrative headquarters of Dolpo region, Dunai. In the evening, we explore the local town of Dunai.

Day 03
Trek to Tarakot

Our trek continues on a fairly easy trail along the southern bank of Bheri River after the early morning breakfast. We pass through the isolated villages, hanging bridges and several deep gorges along the way. After few hours, we will reach our overnight destination at the colorful village of Tarakot, a small village located in the hillock of Bheri River.

Day 04
Trek to Laini

Early morning trek alongside the enchanting Tarap Chu river before reaching the Sandul Gompa which lies at the juncture of Tarap Chu river and Barbung Khola. We continue our walk along the traditional villages and farm terraces. After hours of ascending and descending, we finally reach our overnight destination at Laini.

Day 05
Trek to Nawarpani

We start our day with a climb on a steep trail above the Tarap Chu River. But the walk is fairly enjoyable as we walk from a wide valley to a narrow gorge. Several strenuous ascend and descend along the trail will lead us to the banks of Chyugur River. Through the bank of this enchanting river, we reach Nawarpani.

Day 06
Trek to Dho Tarap

We begin our trek early morning with a gradual ascend towards Kamattarka at the junction of Tarap Chu river and Lang Khola. We then cross a narrow gorge to leave the treeline behind and reach the dry inner Himalayan valley with wild roses and juniper bushes. After a few more hours, we reach the typical village of Dho Tarap. The village is surrounded by a stone wall and is the home to both Bon Po as well as Chaiba religion.

Day 07
Rest Day at Do Tarap for acclimatization

On this day, we will have a much-needed leisure day for acclimatization. During the daytime, we can go for a short hike around the nearby hills and visit the village monasteries. Dho Tarap is also the highest altitude village with human settlement in the world.

Day 08
Trek to Numa La Base Camp

We start our day with a trek towards the upper region of Tarap valley enjoying the magnificent view of lush grasslands to either side of the Tarap Chu rivers, which is kind of unusual for this part of Dolpo. After a few hours of walk next to the river with the breathtaking views of the valley and the mountains, we reach the village of Tokyu. This village is a home to a Buddhist monastery of China-sect. After visiting the monastery, we continue our walk along the rough trials until we reach our overnight destination, Numa La Base Camp.

Day 09
Cross Numa La pass, camp at Pelung Tang

Today marks the most strenuous day in the whole trek. After the early morning breakfast at Numa La Base Camp, we begin our walk on a steep trail towards the top ridge of Numa La Pass. From the ridge, we get an amazing scenic view of the barren mountains of the Dolpo region up to Mt. Dhaulagiri. After that, we descend from the top to Pelung Tang for camping.

Day 10
Cross Baga La pass, trek to Dajok Tang

After the early morning breakfast, we start yet another strenuous day with a steep climb to the top of Baga La pass. From the top, we can enjoy mesmerizing views of the dry landscape of Dolpo and snow-capped mountains at the distance including Mt. Kanjirowa. After spending some time at the top, we descend towards Dajok Tang for an overnight stay.

Day 11
Trek to Ringmo

On this day, we walk mostly alongside incredible pine trees and alpine vegetations. The trek is fairly easy with gradual highs and lows most of the way. After a few hours of walk, we reach Ringmo village, a traditional Tibetan village of Dolpo region.

Day 12
Hike to Phoksundo Lake

Early morning breakfast and walk towards the serene Phoksundo Lake. Along the way, we come across plenty of yak caravans moving in and out and heading towards Tibet on a mountain trails. We also explore a nearby monastery on our way to Phoksundo Lake. Upon reaching the lake, we can enjoy its serene view and tranquil surroundings.

Phoksundo Lake to Shyanta

We begin our trek with a gradual downhill to Chepka from where the trail follows along a massive overhanging rock. We pass through several remote villages before making a gradual ascend to reach Shyanta.

Day 14
Trek to Jhupal

On this day, we head towards Jhupal via Sulighat where the trail is mostly surrounded by birch trees. From the top of the ridge, we get a magnificent view of the Himalayas above us and the beautiful village of Jhupal below us. Upon reaching Jhupal, we can explore the local markets or take a rest.

Day 15
Fly to Nepalgunj, then fly to Kathmandu

On this day, we take the earliest flight from Jhupal to Nepalgunj. Upon landing at Nepalgunj, we take the connecting flight to Kathmandu and fly to the capital. Upon arrival in Kathmandu, we will be transferred to our hotel by a representative of Adventure Sports Nepal. We can then enjoy the leisure day resting at the hotel or shopping around Thamel.
