Trip Overview

Kyajo Ri (6,186m) is a newly introduced trekking peak located in the Everest Region of Nepal. Considered as a semi-technical peak, Kyajo Ri has recently been a fascinating attraction for many adventure enthusiasts from different parts of the world. Starting with an adventurous flight to the Tenzing Hillary Airport at Lukla, this route moves along one of the most popular trekking regions in Nepal around the Everest Base Camp. Traversing through the region, you can get spectacular glimpses of some of the biggest mountains in the world. On top of that, you can also experience the unique and glorious culture of the Sherpa land. The highest elevation point of this adventure is at 6,186m at the summit of Kyajo Ri peak.

What to Expect in Kyajo Ri Peak

Kyajo Ri Peak is considered as a semi-technical peak located in the home of the Himalayas, Everest region. Traversing through the region, one can expect to view breathtaking sceneries of glorious mountains, colourful cultures, Mani walls, prayer flags and traditional Sherpa villages. Although less technical, Kyajo Ri Peak may require a serious commitment to make it to the summit. The summit offers a scenic view of the towering mountains of the surrounding regions. Accommodation in local lodges owned by indigenous locals.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 01
Fly to Lukla and trek to Phakding

After breakfast, we transfer to the domestic terminal of Kathmandu Airport where we check in for the flight to Lukla. After 30 minutes we land at the sloping runway of Lukla Airport which makes for a striking entry. Depending upon the time of our arrival lunch will be served at Lukla or en route to Phakding. Trek from Lukla is an easy one and mostly downhill till we reach Phakding for the overnight halt beside the Dudh Koshi River.

Day 02
Phakding to Namche Bazaar

Following the river upstream we trek through the pine forest with magnificent views of Himalayan peaks in the distant (including Everest later on in the trek). At the entrance of the Everest National Park, details of our permits will be recorded. We head down to the river, cross a suspension bridge and continue up the wooded valley on a good trail. Further on we again cross the river on a high spectacular suspension bridge and proceed towards the confluence of two rivers. From here it's a steep climb to Namche Bazaar on a switchback trail. This is the steepest part of the entire route to the base camp and takes about two hours. You'll have ample time to look around the famed Sherpa capital with its colorful houses built in natural U-shaped amphitheaters.

Day 03
Acclimatization Day at Namche Bazaar

Namche is the capital town of Sherpas and used to be a trading post en route to Tibet during the ancient times. At present, it is a bustling gateway to the Everest region with numerous hotels, lodges, cafes and souvenir shops. A hike up to the Everest Hotel, which takes about an hour, is a good option for acclimatization and for a spectacular view of AmaDablam, Nuptse, Lhotse, and Everest itself. A shorter option would be to hike uphill to the Everest National Park office, perched atop a magnificent spot overlooking Namche Bazaar and breathtaking views of mountains and deep valleys.

Day 04
Trek to Dole

After a day rest at Namche, we start our walk uphill towards a remote village at Shanasa. On a lucky day, we might get to see colorful Danphe, Himalayan Thar, and musk deer. From here the route diverse from the main trail towards Gokyo Lake. The trail leads to a steep climb to Mong hill which offers spectacular views of mountain and landscapes. From here, the trail descends Phortse Tenga and continues with a gradual climb to Tongba and Gyele through the forest of rhododendron, pine, and birch forest. Next, we arrive at our overnight destination at Dole.

Day 05
Trek to Machermo

We start our day with a steep climb on the ridge into a pleasant trail towards Lhabarma Kharka. The trail then passes through Luza where we enjoy the glimpses of Mt. Cho Oyu. The trail then heads to our overnight destination, Machermo.

Day 06
Trek to Gokyo Lake

We start our trek after the early morning breakfast. The first phase of the trek leads to a steep uphill to a hilltop which offers a mesmerizing view of surrounding landscape snow-capped peaks. The trail then heads towards Gokyo. We pass through the first and second lake to reach the third Gokyo lake known as Dudh Pokhari. In the afternoon, we walk around the tranquil lake and enjoy the serenity.

Day 07
Rest day at Gokyo Lake for Acclimatization

We start our day very early towards Gokyo Ri to catch the incredible sunrise over the towering mountain range. The walk maybe strenuous with steep uphill but is worth every effort once we reach the top. The view is simply awe-inspiring with the panoramic view of massifs like Mt. Everest, Cho-Oyu, Mt. Makalu and Lhotse.

Day 08
Trek to Lungden via Renjo La Pass (5,340m)

After an early morning breakfast, we leave Gokyo and enter the valley. The trail ascends uphill through rock spur and ice to the foothills of Renjo La pass. Crossing over Renjo La pass can be quite a challenge. Steep uphills for 3-4 long hours will take us to the top of the pass. The summit offers one of the most astonishing views of peaks including Everest, Cho Oyu, Nuptse, Lhotse, Cholaste, Makalu, and Taboche peak. We then descend through the stone steps towards the glacial lake and then to Lungden.

Day 09
Trek to Thame

After the early morning breakfast, we follow the ancient path along the walled Sherpa village. We might get to see some Himalayan wildlife like deer and yaks along the way. We then follow the traditional trade route between Nepal and Tibet to reach Thame.

Day 10
Trek to Mende

Today, we head towards the east from Thame in the direction of Namche Bazaar. Our trail almost makes a circumnavigation of Kyajo Ri Peak before arriving at Mende.

Day 11
Trek to Kyajo Ri Base Camp

The trail is relatively easier today. Following the narrow yak trails, we cross over the pass to reach Kyajo Drangka. The whole path is scenic as we get to enjoy the glimpses of Kusum Kanguru, Thamserku, Pacharmo and other surrounding mountains. Next, we arrive at the Kyajo Ri base camp where we will set up the camps for an overnight stay.

Day 12
Rest & Preparation Day at Base Camp

An important preparation day at the base camp before starting our climb. On this day, our climbing leader will instruct us about the peak, climbing techniques and the use of climbing gears.

Day 13
Trek to Camp I

After the preparation day, our target today is to reach Camp I. Soon as we leave the base camp, our journey passes through grassy spur which then leads to the rocky uphill section over pebbles and boulders to reach Camp I.

Day 14
Rest and Acclimatization Day at Camp I

Another important rest day to acclimatize on the higher altitude. The main purpose of this leisure day is to try an cope with the increasing elevation. We drink as much fluid as possible and save our energy for the tough climb.

Day 15
Head to Camp II

Our climb to Camp II gets much more technical where we will be climbing through a 55-degree slope. The trail gets wet and slippers as we pass along the glaciers on our way to Camp II. Upon arriving, we can enjoy the astonishing view of the surrounding peaks.

Day 16
Summit Kyajo Ri (6,186m) and descend to Camp II

Big Day! Today, we make our first attempt to summit the Kyajo Ri peak. The day is going to be long and strenuous so starting early is mandatory. Our adventure starts through glaciers and boulders towards the Southwestern ridge. Climbing through ice, snow and small rock section, we arrive at the summit of the Kyajo Ri peak. We spend some time enjoying the breathtaking view from the summit and descend back to Camp II for the overnight stay.

Day 17
Contingency day in case of any delays

This leisure day is allocated in the itinerary to recover from the possible complications that may occur during the climb. A successful summit depends upon several factors like weather condition, health condition, fitness etc. In case of any problems, we'll use this day as a backup.

Day 18
Descend to Base Camp

After the successful summit of Kyajo Ri peak, we'll descend down to the base camp and celebrate our success. Overnight at base camp.

Day 19
Trek to Namche Bazar

We will retrace our way back to Namche Bazar after leaving the Kyajo Ri base camp. The path is fairly easy as most of the trails are gradual downhill. We will be walking in the shades of rhododendron forests passing through several Sherpa settlements to reach Namche Bazar.

Day 20
Trek to Lukla

We start our day with a gradual descent towards the bank of the Dudh Koshi river. From here, the trail is slightly mixed up with few ups and downs until the entrance of Sagarmatha National Park. We then pass through the small settlement at Monjo to reach Lukla.

Day 21
Fly back to Kathmandu

We catch an early morning flight from Lukla and head back to the hustle and bustle of Kathmandu city. Sometimes, the flight from Lukla can be delayed due to bad weather. However, the 30 minutes flight back to the city offers some fascinating scenic view throughout. Upon arrival at Kathmandu, we can either rest in our hotel or go for shopping in Thamel.
